What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that is played on a court with a net. It can be played as singles or doubles, making it a great option for both competitive and recreational play. The rules are simple, the equipment is affordable, and the game is easy to learn, making it accessible to beginners.
How is Pickleball Played?
Players use a paddle to hit a perforated plastic ball over the net. The court is similar to a badminton court, but with a few key differences. The non-volley zone, also known as the "kitchen," is a crucial part of the game, as players are not allowed to hit the ball while standing inside this zone.
Here’s how it works:
-
Serving: The game starts with an underhand serve that must land diagonally across the court. The serve has to clear the net and bounce once before the other team can return it.
-
Double Bounce Rule: Each side must let the ball bounce once before hitting it back. After that, volleys (hitting the ball out of the air) are allowed.
-
The Kitchen (Non-Volley Zone): This is the seven-foot area on both sides of the net where you cannot volley the ball. You can step in to hit a ball that’s bounced, but you must step out before volleying again.
-
Scoring: Games are usually played to 11 points, and you must win by 2. Only the serving team can score points.
-
Switching Sides: In doubles, both teammates get a chance to serve before the other team takes over (except at the start of the game when only one player serves).
Benefits of Playing Pickleball
There are numerous benefits to playing pickleball, both physically and mentally. It provides a great cardiovascular workout, improves hand-eye coordination, and helps to enhance agility and balance.
Beyond the fitness perks, pickleball builds confidence, connection, and community. It’s a space where you can show up as yourself, meet new people, and celebrate the joy of playing.
